How Often Should a Business Post on Social Media? A 7-Step Plan You Can Actually Keep
How often should a business post on social media? For most small local businesses, my starting point is 1 to 3 good posts a week on one or two platforms, then add more only when you can keep it up. The best schedule is the one you can still follow in month six, because consistency beats volume.
I’m James Porter (JP), founder of JP Digital SEO in Fort Lauderdale. I’ve been doing SEO since 2018 and I work with small businesses here and across the country. Owners ask me how often their business should post, usually after a quiet profile starts to look like the business closed. Below is what the big guides say, a table of cadences by platform and by how much time you really have, and seven steps to build a schedule that survives a busy week.
How Often Should a Small Business Post on Social Media? What the Big Guides Say
The popular guides agree on more than they admit. Buffer says small businesses can aim for 2 to 5 posts a week on key channels, and that the right number is the one you can stick to. Hootsuite’s social team says that if you can’t post once a day on each network, aim for every other day, because three quality posts are worth more than five low-quality ones. Adobe Express says to post at least once a week on each channel. HubSpot’s 2025 report found that 64% of marketers post less than daily, and only 19.7% post multiple times a day.
Sprout Social’s 2025 data points the same way: brands are posting less than they did in 2022, not more. So when someone asks how often should a business post to social media, the honest answer from the experts is a range, plus the same warning every time: quality and consistency matter more than a big number. The advice holds whether you ask how often should a company post on social media or how often a one-person shop should.
What most of them leave out
Most of those guides stop at platform numbers. They don’t spell out what a one-person local business can realistically do, who actually does the work, or what to do when all you can manage is one post a week. That’s what the rest of this post covers.
Social Media Posting Frequency by Platform and by Time Available
This table is my starting-point recommendation for small local service businesses. It is not research data, and no schedule can promise reach or leads. Adjust it after you see how your own audience responds.
| Your time | Short videos (TikTok / YouTube Shorts) | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum (about 1 hour a week) | 1 post a week | 1 post a week | 1 post a week | Skip for now |
| Steady (a few hours a week) | 2 to 3 posts a week | 3 posts a week | 2 posts a week | 1 video a week |
| Busy feed (daily effort) | Up to 1 a day | 3 to 5 a week plus Stories | 2 to 5 a week | 3 a week |
How Often Should a Business Post on Facebook?
Buffer, Hootsuite and Adobe all list 1 to 2 posts a day as the ideal for Facebook. That is a high bar for a small local business, so I’d start at once a week and move to 2 or 3 as your content supply allows.
How Many Times a Week Should a Business Post on Instagram?
Buffer and Hootsuite both land on 3 to 5 posts a week for Instagram. Buffer’s data showed about 12% more reach per post at 3 to 5 posts a week than at 1 to 2 a week, with smaller gains as you add more.
How Often Should You Post on LinkedIn as a Business?
Buffer and Adobe both say 2 to 5 times a week. LinkedIn posts tend to stay visible longer, so a couple of solid posts beat a daily scramble.

7 Steps to Build a Posting Schedule You Can Keep
Here is the process I’d walk you through if you asked how often should my business post on social media and wanted a real plan, not a number.
Step 1: Pick One or Two Platforms Where Your Customers Already Are
Don’t spread yourself across five. A plumber’s customers might be on Facebook; a bookkeeper’s might be on LinkedIn. Ask a few recent customers where they look you up, then start there.
Step 2: Count the Real Hours You Have
How often should I post on social media for business? Start with your hours, not the internet’s average. Time one post from idea to published: picture, caption, scheduling. Multiply by the posts per week you want. If that number scares you, it’s the wrong schedule. This is the honest part most guides skip: someone has to do the work, and that someone is you or a person you pay.
Step 3: Set Your Minimum
Pick a floor you can hit even in your worst week. For most owners, how often should a new business post on social media has the same answer as for an established one: start at once a week. If a week goes badly, that one post is still a win.
Step 4: Plan the Post Types
I like a simple mix of three: an offer with one clear call to action, proof of your work (a finished job, a before and after), and a helpful tip. Rotating those three keeps posts easy to write and keeps your feed from turning into constant selling.
Step 5: Batch and Schedule a Month at a Time
Block one afternoon a month to write captions, pick images and schedule everything. Batching is how a once-a-week schedule stays alive when jobs get busy.
Step 6: Make Each Post Easy to Find, Not Just Easy to Scroll
Use plain words customers would search, like the service and your city, in captions. Answer a real customer question in each tip post. Short vertical videos can also show up in Google, so a clip of a real job is worth reusing. My Shorts Package covers TikTok and YouTube Shorts if you’d rather not edit them yourself.
Step 7: Review Monthly and Adjust
Once a month, note which posts got comments, calls or messages. Nudge your schedule up if you have spare capacity, or down if quality is slipping. That is the real answer to how many social media posts should a business use: as many as you can make well. HubSpot’s own guide makes the same point: your data matters more than the average of everyone else.
Checklist: Your Posting Schedule at a Glance
- ☐ One or two platforms chosen, based on where customers look
- ☐ Weekly hours counted from a real timed post
- ☐ Minimum cadence set (a number you can hit in your worst week)
- ☐ Post mix planned: offer, proof, tip
- ☐ A month of posts written and scheduled in one sitting
- ☐ Business name, services and city used naturally in captions
- ☐ Profiles complete: logo, bio, website link and phone number
- ☐ A monthly 15-minute review on the calendar
Who Does the Work? Do It Yourself or Have It Done
If your honest answer from Step 2 is “I don’t have the hours,” that’s normal, and there are two good options. You can trim the schedule to your minimum, or hand the posting to someone who does it every week.
If your profiles are missing or half finished, start with profile setup, which is $99 for your first platform (each extra platform is 20% off). For the posting itself, my 1-a-week, 3-a-week and daily posting plans run $99, $249 and $449 a month for your first platform, with graphics and captions created and published on schedule. They are organic posting only. How much should a business post on social media when hours are tight? Pick the cadence from the table above that matches your capacity, not the biggest number on the page.
FAQ: Posting Frequency for Businesses
Is 2 posts a day too much?
Not for every platform. X and Threads move fast, and Hootsuite suggests 2 to 3 daily there. For most small businesses, two daily posts is hard to sustain with quality, so I’d start lower and build up.
Should I post 3 or 4 times a week?
Either works if you can keep it up. Three posts a week is a strong, realistic target for many small businesses, and it sits inside the 2 to 5 range Buffer suggests. Pick the number you’ll hit every week.
How often should a company post on social media?
As often as it can keep quality up. Larger teams can post more, but a small company can start at 1 to 3 posts a week per platform. Buffer suggests 2 to 5 a week for small businesses.
Should a business post on social media every day?
No, not necessarily. HubSpot’s 2025 report says 64% of marketers post less than daily. Daily posting makes sense only if you have the content and capacity to keep quality high every day.
How often should a new business post on social media?
Start with once a week on one or two platforms, with complete profiles first. Once that feels easy for a month or two, move to 2 or 3 posts a week. Consistency early matters more than volume.
