A Guide for Business Owners and Marketers

Keyword Research for SEO That Finds the Searches Paying Customers Use

Every website is built on a guess or on data. Guess wrong, and you rank for words nobody searches while customers type something else and find your competitor. This guide explains what keyword research for SEO is, what the data says, how to do it, and the mistakes that waste the most money.

Want it done for you? JP Digital SEO does keyword research for $149 for your homepage, $59 per service page, or $399 for a 6-page package (homepage + 5 service pages). See the package.

Why It Matters

What Is Keyword Research in SEO, and Why It Comes First

Keyword research is finding the exact words people type into Google when they need what you sell, then checking how often each one is searched, how hard it is to rank for, and what the searcher actually wants. Every title, heading and paragraph on your site depends on that answer. That is why it comes first, before any writing or design.

Fact: In a study of about 14 billion pages, Ahrefs found that 96.55% get no organic traffic from Google. The first reason it lists: the topic has no search demand. Nobody was searching for what the page targeted.

Fact: Ahrefs also found that about 95% of keywords (94.74%) get 10 or fewer searches a month. Most phrases an owner guesses at fall into that group.

Google's own SEO Starter Guide tells site owners to think about the words a user might search for to find their content. Owners usually describe their work in trade terms. Customers use plain words, problems and places. A roofer says "re-roof". A homeowner types "roof replacement cost near me". Research closes that gap.

Search volume, difficulty and intent

Search volume tells you how many people search a term each month. Difficulty tells you how strong the pages already ranking are. Intent tells you what the searcher wants: to learn, to compare, or to hire. Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines describe this as understanding the user's need behind a query. A page that matches the wrong intent struggles to rank even for the right words.

Why the top spots matter

A Backlinko study of millions of Google results found the first organic result gets about 27.6% of clicks, and is about 10 times more likely to be clicked than the result in tenth place. Picking terms you can realistically reach page one for is worth more than chasing a huge term you will never crack.

What Actually Works

What Works in Keyword Research and SEO, and What Does Not

What works

  • One primary keyword per page, with 3 to 5 close supporting terms
  • Local terms that pair a service with a city or area you serve
  • Checking the live search results to confirm the intent before writing
  • Mixing a few bigger terms with many specific, easier ones
  • Keeping a keyword map so no two pages chase the same term

What does not work

  • Picking keywords from gut feeling or trade jargon
  • Chasing only the biggest, hardest terms in your industry
  • Repeating a keyword over and over (Google's spam policies call this keyword stuffing)
  • Several pages targeting the same keyword and competing with each other
  • Trusting one tool's numbers as exact. Every tool estimates.

A note on tools: the best keyword research tools for SEO are a starting point, not the answer. Ahrefs has reported that Google's own Keyword Planner overestimated search volume more than half the time in its tests, and every keyword research SEO tool rounds and groups terms. Use tools for direction, then use judgment and the live results to decide.

How To

How to Do Keyword Research for Your Site

  1. List your services and areas. Write down every main service you sell and every city or area you serve.
  2. Brainstorm the customer's words. Think problems, prices and places, not trade terms. Ask your team what customers say on the phone.
  3. Pull real data. Use a keyword tool to check monthly volume and difficulty for each idea. If your site is live, check the queries you already show up for in Google Search Console.
  4. Check intent. Search each term yourself. If the results are service pages, it is a hiring search. If they are guides, it is a learning search better suited to a blog post.
  5. Pick one primary keyword per page. Add 3 to 5 supporting terms that fit the same intent.
  6. Build the keyword map. One row per page: URL, primary keyword, supporting terms, volume and difficulty.
  7. Use it everywhere. Put the primary keyword in the title, the H1, the opening paragraph and the meta description, naturally. Review the map every few months.

Keep building: put your research to work with SEO website content writing and blog writing services, then set every page up with onpage SEO services.

For Agencies and Marketers

Keyword Research Checklist for Agencies

If you run keyword research for clients, the quality of the map decides the quality of everything built on it. These habits keep it accurate.

  • Validate tool volumes against Search Console impressions once a page is live, and adjust the map
  • Group keywords by intent, not just by topic, so service pages and blog posts never target the same query
  • Keep a single keyword map per client and check every new page or post against it before writing starts
  • Separate local "service plus city" terms from broad terms and set honest timelines for each
  • Explain to clients that every tool estimates, and report on real queries and clicks, not tool numbers alone
Why Timing Matters

The Cost of Waiting

Every page you publish before the research is done is a page you may have to rewrite. And while you wait, competitors keep picking up the easy local searches you never knew existed.

What waiting costs you

  • Pages targeting words nobody types
  • Content and SEO budget spent with no rankings to show
  • Local customers finding competitors first

What the businesses ahead of you are doing

  • Mapping a keyword to every page before they write
  • Picking up lower competition local terms
  • Building every new page and post on real search data

Ranking for the Wrong Words

You might rank for a phrase nobody searches, while the phrase that brings jobs goes to someone else.

Wasted Content and SEO Spend

Content and on-page SEO built on the wrong keywords cannot deliver results.

Missing Local Searches

Without local keywords, you miss the people in your area ready to hire today.

Competitors Take the Easy Wins

Lower competition keywords you never knew about get scooped up by businesses that did the research.

Revenue left on the table: Picking the right keyword can be the difference between a page that brings calls every week and a page that brings none. Research done once shapes every page, post and title you publish after that.

Keyword Research Services FAQ

What is keyword research in SEO?

Finding the exact words your customers type into Google, then checking how often they are searched and how hard they are to rank for, so each page targets a phrase it can win.

Why not just pick keywords myself?

You can, but owners usually pick the words they use, not what customers search. Research shows the real demand and the real competition.

How many keywords should one page target?

One primary keyword, plus a few close variations that fit the same intent. Two pages should not target the same primary keyword.

Do you do keyword research for bloggers?

Yes. We research blog topics too, so every post targets a question people actually search.

How often should keyword research be updated?

Review it every few months, and any time you add services or areas. Search habits change, and about 15% of Google searches each day are brand new.

What does JP Digital SEO charge?

$149 for your homepage, $59 for each service page, or $399 for a 6-page package (homepage + 5 service pages, save $45). Extra pages after the package are $49 each. One time. See the Keyword Research Package.
